What makes a winning program?

Nearly 15 years ago The Standish Group  (www.standishgroup.com/chaosReport/index -2009) reported that:
  • 68% of IT projects were not delivered on time and/or on budget
  • Of those, 1/3rd were cancelled or never used.

That's a complete failure rate of over 20%. Have new IT development models and a focus on project and change management yielded improvement? Not really . . .

More recently, CIO (www.cio.com/article/3211485/why-it-projects-still-fail) looked at multiple studies from 2016 - 2021 and reported that:
  • McKinsey & Company: 70% of complex change programs don’t reach their goals
  • Boston Consulting: 70% of IT project fall short of their objectives
  • Advanced: 74% legacy modernizations were never completed

But these are all consulting agencies – trying to sell there services. Are there independent studies? It turns out that these consulting-agency studies are consistent with ongoing research within the field of psychology, and also at University Schools of Business, which are looking deeply into the common factors in successful management.
So, what does makes a winning program?
In the last two decades, over 4500 studies on Social-Emotional Intelligence have been peer reviewed and published, and over 1000 of these studies are focused on management and leadership. (Ref PubMed.Gov and ERIC.Ed.Gov).

Research shows that having a resonant leadership environment is the most important factor of success; an environment with shared vision and where people feel connected to their customers, co-workers, organization, and job purpose.

Who creates a culture of resonance and what components determine their success?

Employees reflect the culture that is created from the top down, and the components that make effective senior leadership are:
  • 1/3rd Cognitive Intelligence (IQ): Knowledge, Systems Thinking, and Problem Solving
  • 1/3rd Social Intelligence (SQ): Social Awareness & Relationship Management
  • 1/3rd Emotional Intelligence (EQ): Emotional Self Awareness and Self-Management

What we know will always be smaller in comparison to what is possible. The best solutions not only involve the people and organizations facing challenges, but come by helping to bring their brilliance and ideas to light.
