Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is at the core of our deepest desires. It supports healthy relating, personal growth, physical health, and feelings of freedom and fulfillment.
You can learn about EQ in a book - like learning about golf. However, like practicing to be a better golfer, to embody and live EQ you will want to practice it. The difference with EQ is, as a human, you innately have the skills. You just need to unlearn what you’ve taken on about emotions. That is what will take some practice. A starting point is recognizing that you are not your emotions. They are energies that come and go. They are something you feel, not something you are. This distinction is important, because the idea that we “are” an emotion is party what gets us caught up in them. We take on a belief that if we feel an emotion completely it may never go away. The opposite is actually truer. Not allowing emotions to flow causes them to hang around. That can look like: · perpetuating them with stories, · pushing them down and denying them, or · projecting them onto others in hopes they’ll feel them. How can we begin accessing our innate EQ? A great place to start is by practicing with friends and family. It is also one of the greatest outcomes I see in my life coaching clients. |
