EFFECTIVELY MANAGING UP
In meetings notice where progress is getting stuck.
One of my bosses frequently had heated arguments with one of his peers. My boss was invested in creating a new process that he and I envisioned. His peer was attached to acknowledging that the current process is what had been agreed to. Our meetings achieved little. I met with my boss’s peer and asked him how the current process had come about. Once he expressed that, he continued on with how it could work better. His ideas were similar to ours, some even better. With a few tweaks we came up with an agreeable plan. Your effectiveness in managing up involves an awareness that your bosses, and their peers, and all their bosses, are people, just like you. Seeing authority figures as human beings with their own challenges is a major milestone of personal and professional growth. No matter how you feel about your bosses, someone thought enough to put them in positions of leadership. Give them the benefit of any doubt that they're doing their best with the resources they have. You fit into the bigger picture of what your boss is managing. Create a more aware relationship. Ask them how they see you supporting their overall mission and vision. Maybe you, or someone on your team, has skills to be utilized. |
