Starting a Business Process Improvement Project

If we bring people together to resolve a problem in the workplace, and look first at what’s not working, it is likely that the number of new ideas will be limited.

When we start with what’s wrong we are focusing what we know and the way we’ve always done it. We activate our sympathetic nervous system, our defenses, and our need to survive.

Conversely, if we start with what’s working, we build camaraderie. We activate our parasympathetic nervous system, our creativity, and our desire to thrive. Here is where we find potential and new possibilities. Once this part of the brain is active, then looking at problems can be met with cooperation, fresh energy, and innovation.
So, what do you think happens when we begin our self-improvement work by trying to fix ourselves?

What we know will always be smaller in comparison to what is possible. The best solutions not only involve the people and organizations facing challenges, but come by helping to bring their brilliance and ideas to light.
