Emotional Intelligence is a doorway to experiencing more in life.
We can find ourselves in a pattern of belief that thinking harder will help us discover new and better solutions to a challenging situation. Actually, thinking harder puts us solidly into the logical and reactive parts of our brain(1). There is nothing new or innovative here. These parts of us only contain knowledge and reactivity based on what we have experienced in the past.
‘Think’ of it this way . . . Why is it that we can work hard on a difficult problem all day and get almost nowhere, but then, the next morning after we’ve slept, a new idea suddenly pops into our head? That is because the parts of our brain that think we can find a solution by thinking harder take a rest while we’re sleeping, and we naturally open into listening to the creative parts of our brain(2). We can actually access this creativity anytime we wish - by taking a pause, being present, taking some relaxing breaths, and recognizing our emotions. By allowing ourselves to fully feel and clear the emotions below the surface of our awareness, we are opening to the creative parts of our brain. Additionally, our social-emotional connection with others grows in this authentic space, and so does our awareness of the situation:
What we know will always be smaller in comparison to what is possible. The best solutions not only involve the people and organizations facing challenges, but come from connecting and collaborating with them. (1) left brain & amygdala (2) right brain & prefrontal cortex |
