Q&A

What drew you to non-profit work and supporting communities at risk?
My heart has always led me to service. That began with service to my country, and as I began to grow personally that transformed into service to humanity. One of my passions is transformational change that positively impacts organizations and people. I began volunteering with non-profit organizations in my early twenties, and leading them in my late thirties. It was a path that naturally called to me. Then, after years of supporting powerful change within Fortune 500 companies and government agencies, I turned my forcus to non-profit organizations serving communities at risk. I began co-creating social-emotional, peace, and diversty programs to engage people from all walks of life in co-creating a movement of conscious self, community, connection, and leadership. Supporting the social-emotional health of people and communities in facing their challenges is where he best and most empowering solutions grow from.
I'm drawn to keep leading and engaging philantrhopic organizations, because I believe they provide powerful and influential paths for positively changing society and our world.  My career might look like a whirlwind at times – including simultaneous consulting, coaching, and non-profit work. I would like to pour all of my energy into the latter; job title and paycheck size matter very little to me compared to the fulfillment of helping those in need.

Who is the one person that has done the most to shape your career?
Noel Benner was my mentor when I first became an officer in the Air Force. He saw potential in me that I didn’t yet see in myself. It felt like he made it his mission to help make me the best officer and engineer that I could be. He chose me, and I eventually chose him back. He took his job to heart, and we shared a very close and special bond. He believed I could do anything and solve any problem. Starting from the first job we did together he gave me unbounded space to realize this for myself. He gave me the freedom to figure out problems, to lead others, to speak on his behalf, to lead him, to make mistakes, and to find success at the end of every road.

What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment?
Every time I can help a person or team of people realize something powerful and new about themselves and life – something enlightening, heart-opening, connecting and life-changing – that feels like a great accomplishment. This is why I gravitate to supporting philanthropic social change and empowerment for people and communities. I believe that we can keep opening wider into our humanness and hearts - in our business, communities, and day-to-day lives - and that our greatest accomplishments have yet to be realized. In Ugandan culture people are very polite and non-confrontational at work. Seeing a group of Ugandan managers embrace healthy conflict, and take it on for themselves and their organization as a way to find the best solutions, is one of my most memorable accomplishments.

How would your peers and team members describe your leadership?
I believe that foremost I’m seen as a servant leader. I listen with the sincere intention of learning what’s blocking a person or team from doing their job well, and what help would they like in removing those obstacles and creating a more supportive environment. I like to call it open-door, half-baked servant leadership by walking around. Hopefully the half-baked part raises an eyebrow. It means we are all imperfect leaders in our job rolls and in our relating to each other. We can open to that when trying to work through technical, as well as social-emotional, challenges. We can bring our wildly creative, not-fully-cooked ideas to each other, and complete the baking process together. I also hope that people recognize me as an adaptable leader – someone who can change styles to match the situation at hand.

PRAISE & REVIEWS

“For as long as I’ve known Kevin he has been about service, peace, and changing the world.  We first met in 2008 when Kevin was the Co-Director for Children’s Global Peace project. I loved what he was doing and happily agreed to work together. In turn, I saw that Kevin loved The Journey.  His ability to embody the work grew quickly, and he traveled and supported workshops for individuals and organizations throughout North America.  If there was a delegate with some challenging emotional issues, they often found their way to get support from Kevin.  He was always someone I counted on to take care of anything that needed to get done - no matter how simple or challenging, and no matter how early he needed to be there or how late he needed to stay. In 2010, I asked Kevin to run Journey Outreach North America, and shortly that same year Journey Outreach International made the same request.  He was the breath of life and organizational skills our charity needed. In 2011, I asked Kevin to help me with a start-up venture by managing my software development team.  With his support we made leaps and bounds in progress.  I don’t know if there’s anything he can’t do well.  Kevin and I still collaborate and communicate regularly. I marvel at his tenacity to continue to grow his talents in supporting others. His leadership and management skills, combined with his emotional intelligence experience, make him a perfect hire for any non-profit leadership position. If there’s anyone that is willing to give his whole-heart to a philanthropical organization’s growth and success – I know he is."
Skip Lackey - Founder, Praxis Leadership Academy and CEO, Founder G-Code Partners, Louisville, CO

"I first met Kevin Lockwood in 2007 at a Dances of Universal Peace retreat. He had just returned from trips to Thailand, India and Uganda, and was glowing from the experience. I invited him to join my staff, working with children at a week-long program. It was a gift to have his time. His emotional presence and capacity with children were exceptional, and it was then I asked him to help me write a grant for Children's Global Peace Project (CGPP), and to become a board member. Although he was heading for Uganda again, Kevin agreed to help me and to join the board. If it weren’t for Kevin’s editing and tenacious diligence in planning and accounting, I wouldn’t have pulled it off. After receiving the grant we were faced with our next task; to create an organization to accept the funds and execute the program. Kevin drafted and submitted all of the documentation; we formed CGPP in January 2008. He became my co-director and executive manager for the organization. With his help, and his connections of brilliant friends and colleagues, we formed a powerful board of directors. Kevin created all of our by-laws and agreements, created an elaborate Google wiki-site for collaboration, built a public website, and developed the backbone of our accounting procedures as well as our impact evaluation process. Before moving on to become the Executive Director of Journey Outreach in 2010, Kevin laid down a plan for success in his absence. He was able to bring in two fabulous organizational facilitators from LA and DC. He also drafted a business plan and budget to carry us through 2012. He continues to amaze me with his grace, presence, and willingness to lovingly support others. When Kevin shared his plans to work in large, non-profit leadership and program development, I was not surprised. I know Kevin. This is something he strongly believes is needed for our society, and I agree. It is something I know he will achieve in outstanding fashion. I would urge you to accept his application and enjoy the fruits of his labor."
Theresa Tajali Tolan - Professional Coach, Peace Educator and Consultant, The Consciousness Project LLC, Billings, MT

“I was impressed with Kevin from the time we met, and he has delivered everything I hoped for, and more. He fit in immediately with our staff and our global compliance customers. He works diligently, proficiently, and quickly – facilitating several meetings a day for Latin America, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific. The processes are a challenging and convoluted mix of regulations and I’m amazed at how instantly and effortlessly he has picked it up. He listens vigilantly and asks just the right probing questions in a way that the supports collaborative, supportive teamwork. Kevin is truly a well-seasoned business professional, and definitely knows the ins and outs of Six-Sigma. I know the compliance team feels the same."
Curt Klus - Vice President, Western Union Global Process & Productivity, Englewood, CO

“Kevin is a true professional; invaluable to have on my projects. If there is a better way, he will find it. If there’s not a better way, then he’s willing to do what needs to be done. In other words, he saves me time and money and makes it easier to get the hard stuff done. I also appreciate his well-tuned attention to detail. As a result my projects always end up with better-than-expected results. There are always things that I do not have the capacity to see and correct in time. He also seems to have a knack for seeing the bigger picture, and asking the right questions to run things efficiently; reducing time and materials, avoiding rework, improving work flow, and easing the general frustration that can creep into challenging situations.”
James Ripley – Owner, Creative Endeavors Construction, Boulder, CO

“Kevin is an outstanding coach whose diverse methods help to explore the true essence of who you are and to connect with your true self. He combines spiritual wisdom, intuition and rational thought in ways that inspire, and his insightful methods help you work through emotional blockages and barriers and be your authentic self. Kevin is fantastic to work with.”
Gerry Mellas - Head of DBI Contracts & Governance at Victorian Managed Insurance Authority, Melbourne, Australia

Dec ‘20: “After a few coaching and Intentional Journey sessions with Kevin, I am excited to recommend him. The recent process Kevin chose for my session was perfect and his guidance led me to life changing realizations. I will be back for more when needed. 🙂”
Jul ’22: “Working with Kevin Lockwood has changed my life. He has a complementary set of skills and strategies that model for me how to improve the management of my emotional nature and practice focus for functionality. He sees me and respectfully asks all the right questions that help me reach solutions. Thank you, Kevin!”

SharonAnne Luchene - Creative Educational Personal Care Provider, Denver, CO

“A long time ago I learned how to know a great lesson. I reflect on what I experienced or heard. If, after some time, I am still giving thought to the experience, then I know it was valuable to me. If I forget it right away, then it probably wasn’t that important. I found that I’ve been thinking about your workshop since that evening and I’m always glad for anything that enhances my journey. Kevin, your coaching is a gift to all who open themselves wider. You are so suited to bringing others together and making something good. You lead with a gentle touch that assures people are safe in their own development."
Shirley Shanks Camenzind - Retired Business Owner & CEO, North Wilkesboro, NC
